The Title 9 Challenge

Title IX is viewed in universities, colleges, and departments as an imposition, and a compliance review is a thing to be avoided.  I think this is unfortunate.  I suggest that these units view Title IX as an opportunity instead.  Many units have for years been working on improving the environment for women, and many have made excellent progress; I believe some of these units are already complying with Title IX.  The attention focused on Title IX offers an excellent opportunity for such a unit, which is confident of the progress it has made for women, to volunteer for Title IX scrutiny and capture the recognition it deserves.  It would require self-confidence and courage to volunteer to be first, but I predict it would be rewarded by an increase in faculty and graduate student applications, from both women and men.
