Research Description
Our research program involves fundamental studies in
computational chemistry, with special emphasis on training
and research in new ways to analyze molecular dynamics,
quantum chemical, and quantum mechanical/molecular mechanics
(QM/MM) simulations to solve practical problems in biochemistry
and materials science. Ongoing applications projects
include (1) optimizing electron transfer in photosynthesis,
(2) predicting the structures and learning to control
the aggregation of prion proteins implicated in Alzheimer's,
mad cow, and other neurological diseases, (3) identifying
which polymer segmental motions drive ion transport
in polymer electrolytes to design new polymers for lithium
ion batteries, and (4) understanding structure and bonding
in nitrosyl metalloporphyrin complexes to combat the
cancer-causing properties of organic nitroso compounds.
